On his way to school, Bastian ducks into a bookstore to avoid bullies. Sneaking away with a book called "The Neverending Story," Bastian begins reading it in the school attic. The novel is about Fantasia, a fantasy land threatened by "The Nothing," a darkness that destroys everything it touches. The kingdom needs the help of a human child to survive. When Bastian reads a description of himself in the book, he begins to wonder if Fantasia is real and needs him to survive.

Watching it as an adult does make some of the effects feel cheesier, but that is part of its charm. Kids today may never fully understand what made this movie so magical because they are used to CGI, AI, and technology creating almost anything. The story is compelling and builds a unique world filled with adventure, imagination, and emotion. It captures storytelling that allows you to become attached to the characters while feeling transported into their world. There is something nostalgic about watching this film and remembering what fantasy movies created without today’s technology. It proves imagination can sometimes be more powerful than CGI. I believe The NeverEnding Story will stand the test of time. Someone will eventually remake it, but like The Wizard of Oz, the original will always have something that can never truly be duplicated.
