I’m not usually a huge fan of documentaries because they really have to be captivating and compelling to keep my attention, but this one kept me invested from beginning to end. What worked for me was the way the story was presented through actual footage, firsthand accounts, and stories that helped put you directly into the events. It didn’t simply tell you what happened and move on. It gave you a sense of the fear, confusion, and devastation surrounding 9/11 and the events that followed. I also appreciated how the series explored the generations that came after 9/11 and how the events continue to shape the world today. For those who lived through it, it’s a memory. For younger generations, it is increasingly becoming history. Ultimately, Turning Point: 9/11 and the War on Terror is a powerful and well-produced documentary series. To tie in ICE into this film is ridiculous, I’m sick and tired of directors inputting their politics into documentaries to sway people’s views. Look at how they portrayed Trump in this movie. All of the faces, articles, and clips show aggressive, violent, tyrannical behavior which is extremely deceptive from reality. How about you report on the real cause and effect of why certain changes in policy had to be made. From the crisis at the border, the real threats from other countries, and the reality of competing countries trying to destroy the American way of life. Tell the truth for once!!! To tie 9/11 with ICE is LAZY and only serves the exact countries seeking to destroy America. I had to turn it off with my 4 boys because I would not allow another radical director tell lies to influence the youth of America. My boys will be Americans who respect and fight for truth! Suddenly we're supposed to buy that 9/11 lead to Trump and today's ICE? That's a reach so long it pulls a muscle. ICE isn't staking out mosques, the right's panic is borders, caravans from the south, not Syria. But the doc frames it like the Muslim ban was baked into the rubble. Lazy. And the Right always wanted Iran, always wanted the Patriot Act? Check the vote, almost everyone signed off. Both sides looked sideways at Muslim Americans after 9/11. Not one tribe. Brian Knappenberger barely examines al-Qaeda, the radical Islamist jihadist ideology behind the attacks, their worldwide trauma, or the wider terrorist threat later seen in London’s 7/7 bombings. Instead, he turns 9/11 into a politically correct lecture about Trump, ICE, immigration enforcement and America’s failures. Its treatment of Afghanistan is equally selective, barely acknowledging that President Biden made the final decision and oversaw the disastrous withdrawal. The victims of 9/11, their families, and everyone who died or suffered in Afghanistan and Iraq deserved an honest, balanced account—not to have their pain exploited for political point-scoring. Poorly structured, agenda-driven and deeply unethical, it felt like using the victims’ graves as a platform for the director’s politics. Netflix should be ashamed. Zero stars if I could.
