In the dregs of Depression Era America, a family of performers travels a cold, dying carnival circuit. Seven likes books; Maggie's fond of hammers; daughter Eve's obsessed with scissors. On a ratty stage, quiet Eve sings for their supper, but off-stage their bloody side act is booming. When the family's bond is severed by a violent comeuppance, Eve is there to pick up the pieces. After stealing magic from a sinister Devil-dealing carny, the family's gruesome act begins to shine. But Eve must continue to cut and sew, as the Devil guides them from below.

Some nice cinematography and a terrific premise, but ultimately comes across as a decent student film from someone who's seen early David Lynch and Maya Deren. Terrible, anachronistic music. A few nice scenes.

A "Bonnie and Clyde" like family of three, all afflicted by exxagerated and contrived PTSD, having turned into cruel murderers, psychopaths. Travelling through a frozen American countryside, sleeping rough and murdering anyone in their path with utmost disregard for the law (completely unlike Bonnie and Clyde that were in perpetual hiding). And in possession of a devil's mistress's immortal heart that can revive lost limbs, if only you chant the right lines.

Sometimes you venture into a film with zero expectations, and emerge floored by what you have just witnessed. You didn't see it coming and are grateful for having been so pleasantly blindsided. It doesn't happen often, but is very special when it does. Where The Devil Roams is precisely that diamond in the rough. A starkly haunting, aggressively unique family crafted vision of a disturbed sideshow threesome attempting to survive against the backdrop of Depression Era America. Beautifully shot & dripping with morbidity, this is far from what the average moviegoer consumes. However, if you want to subvert your mind with novel gloom, abnormal personality & rather lovely singing, this macabre road trip/supernatural fable just might be up your alley. If nothing else, you've likely never seen anything quite like it. B+
