Here's the revelation: Miley Cyrus is a really interesting movie star in the making, with an intriguing echo-of-foghorn speaking voice, and a scuffed-up tomboyish physicality (in the Kristen Stewart mode) that sets her apart from daintier girls. The movie has some hokey writing and cheesy moments, but the issue is that the story just isn't that good. I think there are better romance movies, even the ones on the sappier side. I think Miley Cyrus has become an outstanding musician over time, but this movie was sort of a sign that her acting career might not really take off down the line. The movie has a sweetness and innocence that can be likable, but I still found myself just too bored and uninvested to truly get into this one. Overall, it is a movie that feels like it has the potential to be more, but mostly plays it safe and stays surface-level, never really engaging the audience on a deeper level.
