And she gets off scott free! See more Emily H @RT05813518 Aug 3 Lolita..good old Lolita. One of the hardest novels to adapt into a fim. Yet Adrian Lyne manages to do this in a perfectly sensitive and appealling manner, much unlike Kubrick's initial adaptation. Whilst also being picturesque, aesthetic and true to the time period, this novel is adapted in a way in which it allows us to see the bitter sweet nature of it all whilst also taking away the consequences and truly painful, twisted sentiment of this trope. It doesn't overly romanticise the situation. Nor does it put a big, awkward lesson in our face. It does the teaching subtly, through laughter and tears. Whilst watching this film, we can't help but applaud Dominique Swain for her take of the character. It must have been daunting and hard for her, to portray this girl younger than her but in situations more mature than she probably has experienced. Imagine how difficult it would of been to kiss a man essentially triple your age for a film? She takes on the role perfectly, reminding us constantly of Lolita's innocence and hormonal youth unlike yet again, the 1962 version of this film. So, if you're ready to wittness new tabboos and probably cry your eyes out, give Lolita a watch. See more Chris F @thechrisfigaro Jun 20 My immediate reaction to any attempt at sympathising with Humbert is utter disbelief. What on earth were they thinking? This man is a predator, a loathsome creep who not only sexualised but also engaged in sexual acts with a young girl he was meant to protect as her legal guardian. He utterly decimated her life. Dolores was meant to be in school, experiencing a normal childhood, socialising, and flourishing. Instead, her innocence was stolen, and her future irrevocably scarred. There can be no compassion, no quarter given, for someone who commits such an egregious violation. Adding to his monstrous acts, he is also a murderer. While the man he killed may have been deserving of his fate, that does not in any way absolve Humbert of his crime or diminish the horror of his actions. My heart truly aches for Dolores.
