For fans of swordplay, Kyoto Inferno provides plenty of one-on-one standoffs, meaty-but-elegant mass slashings and even a whiff of courtly love. Go to Full Review

It's entertaining in parts, but wildly overlong and narratively ill-disciplined. Go to Full Review

An 80-minute B-picture stifled under an extra hour's worth of expensive production design. Go to Full Review

A picture that thrives in its unique subverting of the typical action hero. Go to Full Review

Logan D @Greynomad38 Apr 2 Kenshin (Takeru Satoh) agrees to stop a major threat to Kyoto. Sword, sword, punch, sword! I've never read the manga but have seen the original anime and am current with the new one. That said, I think this film ignores the anime and just sticks with the manga. It's far more serious and has less diversions. It's a clean although crowded plot. Certainly bigger and darker. One thing definitely appealed to me. Shuriken, swords, and sai are fine weapons but loved seeing a tonfa in action! Couple all this with a strong period atmosphere and we have an enjoyable film. Most of the casting is spot on. Takeru Satoh is perfect as Kenshin and Ryunosuke Kamiki does a fantastic job as sociopath Sojiro Seta (one of my top favorite villains ever). I'm not happy with the portrayal of Sanosuke, Kenshin's brawler friend. He's supposed to be about 19 so we can excuse his outbursts. Instead, he's played by a 30 something year old who does not look young. Supported by strong performances and fitting sound design, this sequel stands strong on its own but shines brighter when watched after the first film.
