OK, it’s a tough call to reinvent yourself afresh after 30 years, but this is a definite case of Could Try Harder. Not a totally horror show – just a bit of a snore.

Scream 7 lacks any semblance of its energy on either the horror or the comedy side of things. It’s not scary, and it’s not that funny. I wish some studio executive had the bravery to kill the franchise. Be sure to shoot it in the head.

Despite Neve Campbell’s welcome return, and some thrillingly nasty kills, with this entry Scream has become what it once deconstructed and in doing so becomes a carbon copy of its once incisive, thrilling meta slasher roots.
