Viewers who claim to love cinema, but then wince at what film scholars call “slow cinema” will resist this amazing film’s acclaim. “Slow cinema” is not boring cinema. “Slow cinema” is designed to make the viewer part of the film. As Paul Schrader’s “transcendental cinema” theory demonstrates, films like this are designed to make you an active part of the cinematic process. Unlike “pop cinema” where the film washes over the viewer who sits and watches passively, expecting to be dazzled, slow cinema demands more. The viewer is expected to engage actively with the film. It’s not going to be laid at your feet. You have to fill in the gaps, decide the reasons why a character is doing what she’s doing, find and understand the things that are not being shown or explained. There is very little exposition. You have to determine the why’s and the how’s. Jeanne Dielman Is the perfection of this mode of cinema. If you watch it passively, you won’t appreciate or enjoy it. It will seem boring or pointless.
