Critics Consensus

Turning an uncomfortable conceit into an emotionally resonant comedy makes Alice and Steve the best chaotic friends to spend some time with.

There’s lots to like here, with some big laughs and intriguing relationship dynamics that offer room for a second season. Go to Full Review

The best love stories are ugly and uncomfortable and, yes, messy and complicated, too. But they’re the best because they’re true, and Alice’s truth is on fire, even if her love is nothing but smoldering ash. Go to Full Review

The ending is ridiculous but all of a piece with a main story in which nothing is convincing or authentic and nothing is earned or resolved. The ick is the least of Alice and Steve’s problems. Go to Full Review

What’s remarkable is how deftly the show uses this uncomfortable, almost-but-not-quite-creepy relationship to excavate so many other themes -- and how the comedy creates enough breathing room for genuine emotional excavation. Go to Full Review

It is imperfect, occasionally overstuffed and slightly too in love with its own escalation. That said, in Nicola Walker and Jemaine Clement, this show has two performances that are so pleasingly combustible together that you don’t much care. Go to Full Review

Mark P @groovydave 4h Great binge! If you want to easily stream through a series on a rainy or sick day, this might be the best choice. Great acting, breezy story, and takes a simple setup and makes it believably complicated. There was one minor blip at the end, but forgivable for the sitcom world it lived in. See more Aye E @RT43717499 1d This show is conflicting but not so much due to the age gap romance and boundary crossing of relationships, but that the two lead characters are so difficult to watch or understand. He's super passive and doesn't know himself, which is it's own kind of selfishness and is not fun to watch on it's own, but Alice, while I suppose we're supposed to understand her having a negative reaction, is SOOOOO unpleasant and self-destructive it's hard to believe she EVER had a husband OR a best friend. The show never established why the friends should be likeable in the first place, then they just become unbearable to watch. I do like how the show ended, and it did redeem some of the middle arc of the season and I can see where things will land with the characters without it having to be explained in a Season 2, please do NOT do a season 2, this was enough. Oh, and I just discovered this was supposed to be a comedy, laughing one time does not a comedy make. See more Lia T @RT62976035 1d Great show. People are reading too much into the fact that he's twice her age when they're both consenting adults. See more Walter J @RT75119062 1d The main characters are hilarious but once again the woke children are the wisest most experienced people in the world. This premise is played out garbage. Not worth it See more Christine J @ChristineJ 1d I've only watched two episodes of the show, so perhaps I shouldn't review, but as the mom of a 26-year-old woman myself, I just cannot get past the "ick" factor of this premise. While the thought of a best friend/former boyfriend sleeping with my daughter is gross enough, the fact that this man likely knew Izzy as a baby, and watched her grow up, seals its fate for me. I wonder if creator Sophie Goodhart really thought about this when penning their "romance." I love Jemaine Clement and Nicola Walker is excellent in the role as Alice, and the end of the second episode (where the viewer thinks Alice, after being chastised by her entire family, may rethink her behavior...but she doubles down instead) ALMOST makes me want to watch episode three. But I just don't think I can get past it. Gross, Steve, gross...go find a woman who likely didn't call you "Uncle Steve" when she was growing up. See more prawnda S @RT72497680 2d it has it's moments, but it kinda just ends randomly with a narrative contrivance and a cliffhanger on episode 6. yet another project with 1 season or 1 film's worth of content that desperately wants to be 2 or more seasons.
