In the post-Tarantino west, the term "spaghetti western" immediately conjures twangy electric guitars, steely gazes, and zippy camera moves. The key to "Heads or Tails?" is that it is NOT a spaghetti western in that overly familiar manner. It's very much an Italian western, with that strange, compelling style that only Euro films provide. From gold teeth to gatling guns there are many elements from spaghetti westerns, like class warfare themes from Sergio Leone's later films, a revenge plot like 'Bullet For Sandoval", and the fever dream of Peckinpah's "Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Garcia." While John C. Reilly is featured in the trailer, he appears only sporadically as a specter of the American version of the west. His presence, and the two contrasting ballads in the film, recall John Ford's "Liberty Valance" credo about facts and legends. "Heads or Tails" is terrific film that may captivate you - as long as you don't expect something like "Django" or "The Quick and the Dead."
