Rating Title | Year Author Quote
C
Ghosts of Mississippi (1996) Dan DiNicola It succeeds as a detective story and moral fable, but the courtroom scenes lack bite and the domestic matters are pure made-for-TV movie.

C
The First Wives Club (1996) Dan DiNicola Simple and trite.

C+
The Evening Star (1996) Dan DiNicola The results are at best mixed. The problem is that this is too much a melodrama and much too long.

B
The English Patient (1996) Dan DiNicola It's long and slow, but it has undeniable romantic appeal. This could be the romantic hit of the holiday as well as an Oscar contender.
Posted Apr 10, 2026Edit critic review
C
Daylight (1996) Dan DiNicola As with most disaster films, there are some spectacular explosions and scary acts of destruction, but the human activity is not so well executed.

A
The Crucible (1996) Dan DiNicola A powerful, vital and compelling adaptation of the great Arthur Miller play.
Posted Apr 10, 2026Edit critic review
A-
Breaking the Waves (1996) Dan DiNicola A movie which is both powerful drama and for some a religious awakening.
Posted Apr 10, 2026Edit critic review
C
Beavis and Butt-head Do America (1996) Dan DiNicola Before the movie peters out, some funny situations do arise. Shrink back in horror if you wish, but these too are genuine American adolescents who still come in all ages.

B+
William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet (1996) Dan DiNicola A daring and audacious rendering which has the courage to be a movie instead of some slavish imitation of a stage play.
Posted Apr 10, 2026Edit critic review
B
Star Trek: First Contact (1996) Dan DiNicola An accomplished offering with a dual plot -- part Moby Dick, part Back to the Future, or rather back to the past. A pleasant time-warp plot.
Posted Apr 10, 2026Edit critic review
B
Space Jam (1996) Dan DiNicola Though hardly dramatically challenged, Jordan has a winning presence and even spoofs himself and his failed baseball experiment.
Posted Apr 10, 2026Edit critic review
B
Sleepers (1996) Dan DiNicola Prepare to have some juicy discussions about ethics, morality and justice.
Posted Apr 10, 2026Edit critic review
A+
Secrets & Lies (1996) Dan DiNicola A masterpiece brought to us by Mike Leigh who has no peer when it comes to depicting working-class families.
Posted Apr 10, 2026Edit critic review
B-
Ridicule (1996) Dan DiNicola [An] enjoyable and perceptive French comedy.
Posted Apr 10, 2026Edit critic review
C
Ransom (1996) Dan DiNicola As taut as their film may appear to be, it doesn't know when or how to release its energy. A slick, shallow movie.
Posted Apr 10, 2026Edit critic review
C
The Preacher's Wife (1996) Dan DiNicola Nice but uninspired, it fails to transcend the original.
Posted Apr 10, 2026Edit critic review
C
101 Dalmatians (1996) Dan DiNicola Despite a promising start and its high-tech styling, this highly-ballyhooed live action feature is disappointing.
Posted Apr 10, 2026Edit critic review
B-
One Fine Day (1996) Dan DiNicola Michelle Pfeiffer are that rarity, incredibly good-looking leads who can act. A "Pillow Talk" for the '90s.
Posted Apr 10, 2026Edit critic review
B-
My Fellow Americans (1996) Dan DiNicola It's facile and relatively unambitious. But with the two stars, it's still fun and better than Grumpy Old Men.
Posted Apr 10, 2026Edit critic review
C-
The Mirror Has Two Faces (1996) Dan DiNicola Streisand fans will like it. But her unwillingness to look bedraggled undermines the drama of the movie.
Posted Apr 10, 2026Edit critic review
D
Michael (1996) Dan DiNicola No magic here; just John Travolta with dirty angel wings looking silly in a ridiculously inept story.
Posted Apr 10, 2026Edit critic review
B-
Mars Attacks! (1996) Dan DiNicola It's a novelty, an outlandish succession of scenes, some funny, a few memorable and as the movie drags on, more than a few, tiresome.
Posted Apr 10, 2026Edit critic review
D-
Jingle All the Way (1996) Dan DiNicola This is a one joke movie that ends as a downer.
Posted Apr 10, 2026Edit critic review
B+
Jerry Maguire (1996) Dan DiNicola After a lackluster stint in Mission: Impossible, Cruise is terrific as a slick sports agent who goes soft and finds middle-class romance.
Posted Apr 10, 2026Edit critic review
Sense and Sensibility (1995) Dan DiNicola Rich, tart, witty, romantic and whimsical, it is an absolute gem: indeed, it is a masterpiece in wondrous storytelling.
Posted Feb 26, 2026Edit critic review
Erin Brockovich (2000) Dan DiNicola A film that features by far the finest work turned in by Julia Roberts. If you've grown tired of watching her plays the perky, adorable colt with the forced smile, this depiction of a real woman comes as an almost shocking revelation.
Posted Feb 06, 2026Edit critic review
Days of Heaven (1978) Dan DiNicola The magical attraction of Days of Heaven is that it takes us out of time into a mood and experience which dreamily wander to the roots of American existence.
Posted Feb 04, 2026Edit critic review
The American President (1995) Dan DiNicola Besides its sweet charm, The American President does capture the hectic White House pace before dinners and briefings. Most of all, it gives us Annette Bening.
Posted Jan 21, 2026Edit critic review
The Princess Bride (1987) Dan DiNicola Reiner has outdone himself. He has taken William Goldman's The Princess Bride and made it into a movie for all ages, and by that I mean it will entertain us forever and appeal to all of us.

4/5
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991) Dan DiNicola This is perhaps the most enjoyable and certainly the most literate of the movie episodes. With allusions to Shakespearean drama and sharp parallels to the brave new world we live in, the film is often as funny and clever as it is engaging.

3/5
The Prince of Tides (1991) Dan DiNicola It's a big, old-fashioned romantic melodrama with some touching moments and strong bits of acting.

5/5
JFK (1991) Dan DiNicola It's propaganda all right, but it challenges, entertains and shocks us out of our complacency.
Posted Dec 18, 2025Edit critic review
3/5
For the Boys (1991) Dan DiNicola At best, this is loose, baggy, lighthearted, aimless diversion.
Posted Dec 18, 2025Edit critic review
5/5
The Fisher King (1991) Dan DiNicola A gloriously enchanting adult fairy tale with five performances worthy of nominations for the Academy Award, not to mention the film itself and director Terry Gilliam.

3/5
Father of the Bride (1991) Dan DiNicola A promising comedy which runs out of ideas.
Posted Dec 18, 2025Edit critic review
5/5
Cape Fear (1991) Dan DiNicola This is a superbly taut and frightening chunk of suspense at once accessible and tinged with psychological complexity.
Posted Dec 18, 2025Edit critic review
4/5
Bugsy (1991) Dan DiNicola A dashing mix of atmosphere and plot with excellent performances from a supporting cast, including Ben Kingsley and Harvey Keitel. It's great fun -- candy for adults.
Posted Dec 18, 2025Edit critic review
2/5
The Addams Family (1991) Dan DiNicola Director Barry Sonnenfeld has given us a plotless movie and conspicuously avoided almost all chances to go wild and crazy.
Posted Dec 18, 2025Edit critic review
3/5
Hook (1991) Dan DiNicola Lavish and leaden, it is a movie with the Spielberg genius but without the Spielberg magic.
Posted Dec 18, 2025Edit critic review
The Running Man (1987) Dan DiNicola Once you accept what it is doing and take it for what it is, some of "Running Man" is fun to watch.
Posted Nov 06, 2025Edit critic review
Toy Story (1995) Dan DiNicola Toy Story is a pure and entirely wonderful triumph. Take the kids. Take yourselves.
Posted Sep 09, 2025Edit critic review
Darkman (1990) Dan DiNicola "Darkman" is far from being a masterpiece, but it is sometimes great fun. It's wild and zany, and it sends some delightful curves and some familiar whizzing at us.

Waterworld (1995) Dan DiNicola You can watch Waterworld just to marvel at the ropes and coils that fly all over the place.
Posted Jul 28, 2025Edit critic review
The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (1988) Dan DiNicola From the opening prologue, "The Naked Gun" is a steady riot of chuckles, guffaws and old-fashioned belly-laughs.
Posted Jul 25, 2025Edit critic review
The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear (1991) Dan DiNicola It is, to be blunt, about 80 percent as good as the original... [But] even working without one of its original cylinders, Naked Gun 2½ is packed with some hilarious scenes.
Posted Jul 22, 2025Edit critic review
Jurassic Park (1993) Dan DiNicola Doubtless, readers of the novel will have a quibble or two, but for a terrifically imaginative and dazzling summer movie, the thrills are hard to beat.
Posted Jul 01, 2025Edit critic review
Supergirl (1984) Dan DiNicola Szwarc's movie is so tame, so utterly without sense that it must have been made by committee.
Posted Jun 28, 2025Edit critic review
The Karate Kid Part II (1986) Dan DiNicola Karate Kid Part II lives on stale lines from old westers and jaded serials.
Posted May 27, 2025Edit critic review
The Karate Kid (1984) Dan DiNicola Adults will have a difficult time holding back snickers during the predictable scenes, but at the same time, The Karate Kid does pack some genuinely thrilling entertainment for younger audiences.
Posted May 27, 2025Edit critic review
Mission: Impossible II (2000) Dan DiNicola A hyped-up, much-ado-about-nothing fantasy, a pull-the-wool-over-the-audience's-eyes special.
